The public transit in the city

Prague (in my opinion the most beautiful city in Europe) has a very efficient public transport system. You can take a metro, tramway or bus almost to any corner of the city. The most efficient system is underground train.

    Metro

It has 3 major lines, plus 1 is planned for construction in near future. The main stations are:
  • Dejvicka to Depo hostivar (Line A)
  • Zličin to Černy Most (Line B)
  • Letnany to Haje (Line C)
  • The metro system began operating in 1974. Daily, more than 1,7 million people ride on metro. Trains are very frequent, arriving at stations every 2 - 3 minutes tops. Trains begin to operate at 5 in the morning and they stop at midnight. My experience with Prague metro is very positive. Trains are accurate and never late. The crime level is very low and I felt really safe while riding the underground. Well you can meet some homeless guys wandering around the trains to get some warmth, but that's pretty much everything. All stations are clean and tidy. Some have bars, public WCs and fast food stands. Many stations are also equipped with escalators (some stations also allow access for the disabled passengers). You can't bus a ticket on every station though. The metro ticket cost is:
  • 32 CZK for 90 minutes ride
  • 110 CZK for 1 day pass
  • 310 CZK for 3 day pass
  • 10 CZK is about 0,5 EURO. More info can be found here: http://www.dpp.cz/en/fares-in-prague/

    Tramways

Also quite effective, yet slower and more bumpy than metro. Prices are the same because one ticket is valid for all types of public transport in Prague. More info can be found on the above mentioned link. Trams in Prague have a wider coverage though. So for reaching more distant or more local corners of the city take a tram. If you will be heading to the Caste (and I'm sure you will) then take a tram, because it will take you closer to the hill. If you are on foot walking around the city be careful because you might get hit by tramway cruising down the street. They are powered by electricity and as a result very quiet.
  • Ljubljana public transport system

    The Ljubljana public transportation

Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia. It is rather small city (around 500.000 inhabitants with surroundings). Currently only bus system operates in the city. Ljubljana used to have a tramway system too, but the tracks were removed few decades ago. That was a bad decision. The city today has many problems with the traffic on mains streets interconnecting different parts of the city. Although this streets are 3 lanes wide (in each direction) on rush hours traffic becomes horrible. Some cross roads are no longer signaled by traffic lights (because they become useless when all drivers want to go trough the crossroads as fast as possible and hence they make a traffic jam) but they are rather controlled by an officer who is directing the traffic by his hands. Public transportation in Ljubljana is operated by LPP (Ljubljanski mestni promet) which currently operates more than 400 trolley-buses. Trolley-bus is a longer bus (like two buses connected together). The system is effective only between non-traffic hours. Some streets have only-for-bus-and-taxi lanes which improves the effectiveness of this public transport. In between rush hours you can get stuck in traffic jam for a long time. If this is the case, taking a walk or going by bicycle will save you some time. Buses are priced fairly. One ride will cost you 1,20 Euro. You will need to buy a smart card first to pay for the ride. The price of smart card is 4 Euro (and you can pay for rides with this 4 Euro, so basically the card is for free). When you purchase a ride you can take another ride withing 90 minutes for free. This is a good feature. Buses are clean and tidy, with no criminal, because there are video cameras on every vehicle. Also, the frequency of arrivals and departures from any station trough out the city is very high. You will not wait more than 10 minutes for any bus.

  • Benefits of public transportation

What are benefits of public transportation?

What is best public transport today? What are the best methods of travelling around the city? That depends of course what is the size of the city. If it is a small city that you might as well walk around it. If it is a medium sized city you can take a bike and ride it all over the town. But when it comes to really big cities like London, New York or even Shanghai, bycycle or walking on foot just isn't an option.

    Public transport is effective

Without public transport you can't get anywhere in the big city. Crowded streets are difficult to walk on, and crowded roads are just an impossible solution to your logistic problem. So which method of public transport to chose? Here is a good article describing the dilemma: Which is the best type of public transport? Good reading.

    Benefits of using public transport

The biggest benefit is of course the time you save by taking a subway for example. Today, time is money and vice versa. To go from point A to point B you need an effective public transport method. The most effective method is Metro system. Some call it underground train. Because the system runs mostly underground it is very effective and never jams (unless there is an accident on tracks or something similar). What you benefit from metro system is that you can be in any part of the city in a matter of minutes, and even in the biggest cities in a matter of few dozen minutes. It is really that effective. Imagine walking tens of kilometres, or getting stuck in a traffic jam... Also, when you are on metro train, you can read or do some other work (if the train is not too crowded). Some say security is a problem for underground trains, but this is not the case. Underground stations may be a good place for pick pocketers or some occasional thieves, but nothing to worry about - security is a strong point here. Other types of really effective public transports are also: Commuter, intercity, and high-speed rails. Buses are not so effective as they can easily get stuck in traffic jams (rush hours...). So to benefit most of public transportation make sure to always pick underground, even if it is a bit more expensive than, let's say a bus.

This means of transport uses underground tunnels as passageways , these tunnels connect throughout the city for a certain distance and then goes to other channels which are pick up and drop off points. These then connect to the normal railway lines and then to the other parts of the city. In most cities, a metro can encompass of three to four lines.

    Metro transport

These lines have representation in different colours and signs. These simply distinguish each line from the other. These colours distinguish the functions, length and capacity of each line. These lines serve various parts of the city and the amazing thing is that they are all well connected for their purposes. Many commuters use metro because it is fast, efficient and affordable. It connects all parts of the cities, ensuring that you get to your destination in a safe and timely manner. Many metro stations are large enough to facilitate the many travellers going in and out. Because of the size and amount of travellers using the metro, there are several entrances and exits. These are clearly marked to ensure that there is no confusion as people come out of the surface. Many metro stations are laid out in such a manner that they usually meet in a triangular form. This form ensures that the three or four lines meet in the centre of the city to the interchanging stations. This ensures that there is no chance of collision and there is maintenance of safety through each line. The stations are in such a way that there is little congestion between the interchanging lines.

    Metro stations

In most metro stations, there are halls and lines. Each hall and line in the station ensures that it serves the passengers in an efficient and capable manner. In most cases, tunnelling shields are in use for boarding purposes. The depth of the connecting lines differs and this depends on the length and set up of the city. • Tramway transportation

An easy and convenient means of transport

Everybody does enjoy good and reliable transportation. This is exactly what the tramway offers you and ensures that you have an excellent time as you travel. This vehicle resembles a train. The resemblance is in the way it looks and in the way of operation. The tramway carriage resembles a train carriage. The top part of this carriage is connected to electric lines, which gives it power. On the ground, it has a rail looking road, similar to a train. In many big cities, this is a common means of transport and this is because it is affordable and efficient. The tramway has a specific distinction to other streetcars. This one has two doors as an entrance and exit. Two doors the purpose of ensuring there is order in the tramway and that there is orderly payment of fares. • Bus transportation

    Bus

Transportation is necessary if people are to move from place to place. If you don’t own a vehicle and you want to move around then you will find public transportation readily available in the form of trolley cars, planes, subway, taxis and the bus. The bus has become a very popular means of public transportation and they vary in the service they offer: tour buses, coach buses and school buses. Tour buses are used to transport tourists around, especially in major cities throughout the world. You can even find double decker buses among the lot. A tour bus is used extensively for city tours. School buses are some of the most recognizable vehicles on the roads today. They are bright yellow and are equipped with red and yellow flashing lights to warn other motorists of children exiting the vehicle onto the roadway.

    A Coach bus

is used mainly by athletic teams to move from one school or college to another and from the airport to hotels or the stadium. They are designed for across country trips and have built in facilities such as bathroom, television and comfortable seating. Coach buses can be identified because they are decorated with decals and painted in the college team colors or the pro team's colors and the lo,go. Coach buses are used mainly by Colleges and Universities alike. Then there is the public transit bus. They are visible everywhere on the roads today. These buses are used to take civilians from home to work and from home to school. People from all walks of life use public transit buses to go the ballgame, to the movies and to concerts. Another type of bus in operation today is the trams or tramcars. They are used to shuttle people to and fro in a large parking lot, such as at the airport or in a theme park. The trams are usually smaller than the average bus but they help in the same way- and that is -to move people from one place to another.

There are other uses for the bus.

One of which is that you can charter a bus to take you anywhere. These charters are usually done by a company or by a church. The purpose is to carry a large group of people in one sitting. It is more economical to travel this way and the time frame is basically that of cars and you have a bathroom on board to take care of your personal needs. The word bus comes from the word omnibus. The word omnibus means ‘for all.’ This means that anybody who wishes can travel on a bus. Whether you are a worker, a student or a tourist, buses assist you in your movement from one point to another daily. Initially the French were the first ones to use a bus in 1862. These busses were drawn by horses and were made to seat up to five persons. Buses have been designed to assist commuters to move from place to place. They have enhanced our lives and made movement more pleasurably. So whatever your situation; student, worker, or someone on a tour, think about the public transportation. What would you do if the bus was not there to transport you from where you are presently and to where you want to go next?
  • The London Metro The Tube

The London Metro system is a backbone of the city

Although the London metro originated in the early 19th Century, it is still very much the backbone of the 32 busy boroughs of the city. While the world was changing at the blink of an eyelid, the city of London was not very far behind and London metro bears testimony of the same. The London metro was the first successful underground railway project and is considered as an engineering marvel. Let’s see how it has succeeded in has woven the intricate transport network of the London city.

    First underground railway

Germinated from an idea that sounded stupid and as an insult to human senses, the London tube was proposed to be trains in drains. Charles Pearson, the pioneer of London tube proposed the construction of railway system under the roads of the city. People laughed at it first. It was ruled out immediately when the news was published by the Times as a joke by Londoners. But the Tube did open to an overwhelming welcome and now around 11.8 million passengers travel brave the odds of the London metro like rush and heat to reach their desired destination.

    The network called The Tube

The London metro or popularly known as the tube has a well knit network. It connects the 32 boroughs of the London city, serving 270 stations by rail of which 14 stations are outside the city of London. This makes it easier for the people who live in the vicinity easier to reach the city through peak hours of traveling. The London tube also expanded its network because of cut and cover method that helped creating deep level lines, hence giving birth to the word tube. This also helped laying of electric lines which meant faster trains and increase in the transit rate.

    Accessibility and safety

Many a times, questions have been raised regarding the safety of the London metro but then again numbers prove all those concerns wrong. But the safety records of the London subway are much better than any other transport system of the same nature. The authorities have put in immense effort and dedication for 15 continuous years to get your great figures in safety. The London metro helps around 3 million passengers travel safely during the weekends making it a 1000 million passengers annually.

    Problems encountered by the tube

Like any other giant transport network, even the tube or the London subway suffers from its problems and limitations. With the underground water level rising, there are chances of the stations getting flooded. Sometimes, during monsoons, some stations are shut down because of cloudbursts. Apart from flooding, sometimes ventilation is also an issue that has topped the list of the problems encountered by the London Metro. Even though there are many ventilations and air shafts, sometimes, it does become stuffy and hot. This results into rise in temperature in the stations during the summer months. Love it, hate it, but the fact is, you have to live with it, because living without the London metro is not really an option for Londoners. London Metro has been an integral part of the city and is part of the popular culture. Like every city has a charm of its own, London surely has it charm well guarded in the intricate lines of the metro railway or fondly called the tube.
